Week 7 - half term

I had a few days off work this week, as it's half term. Not half term for me, I'm not quite 2 months in, but the kids were off, and so we started the week by visiting my Mum in Canterbury. It was fun to drive along some of the lanes I cycled down in August on an epic ride to Whitstable with my friend Mike, and the autumn sunshine, colour & light was beautiful. I took a packed lunch - thanks Anna for the flask you gave me for Christmas a couple of years back, it's proving very useful - and so wasn't tempted by the crisps & pasties the kids were scoffing. I can't lie though, there were some pangs of longing.

On Tuesday I went for a great muddy bike tide along the Thames with my friend Mark, from Hampton Court to Putney, where we had a cuppa in a pub with our friend Ben - admirably resisting my usual pub fare of beer, chips & crisps. What's happening to me! On the way home by train I missed a connection at Clapham and decided to try and go back through a Central London terminus. I should have just waited for the next one, as I then ran afoul of the jobsworth ticket gate staff at pretty much every London terminal I tried - if your bike doesn't fold, you ain't getting on. At this point I should have just cycled home, but I didn't find a bike shop to buy any lights until Brixton, and at that point I just wanted to get the train to prove a point. Entirely petty, but I still stuck it to the "man"...🤣

While I was able to stick to the plan all week, there was some minor anxiety about the inevitable slow down of weight loss, which is sure to happen at some stage. I want to keep this good start going, but I have to accept that it'll happen in the right way and in its own time. But having been a fat knacker for so long, and seeing the results so far, I'm impatient to see what happens next, and how far we can go. I have to keep reminding myself to follow & believe in the process.

In other small win news, one of my cycling buddies who I hadn't seen for 3 weeks - and someone who's only seen me twice in fact - said that I had noticeably changed in that time. And another person who didn't know me at all but heard me talking to a friend about what I'd been doing asked me how much i'd lost, as I looked pretty normal to him. I'm taking that!

But the best thing was the comparison photo. Apologies for lack of clothing, but you can really see the  difference! I just keep asking myself why i waited so long to do this - the answer is that I suppose I wasn't really ready, and turning 50 has had a big impact too. I don't have any excuses for not doing it either any more - especially as I no longer have the hurdles of a commute, an office, working late, the journey back, the pub to navigate. It's below!

Some of the food this week:

Tomato & Cucumber salad, with olive oil, salt & pepper. Simple, delicious!

Lentil soup & a cuppa:

Baked fish with beans & toms, with a few chilli flakes. Yum!

That photo - before & after, approx 6.5 weeks apart. O.M.GGGGGGGGG!

Thanks for reading! I really appreciate all the support & messages you send me, I really do. I still find it more than slightly surreal to be inspiring some of you to take the next step on your own weight loss journeys, but trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. Once you've made the decision, you will not look back.

Sorry for burning your eyes! See you next week.

  1. Amazing progress, you're right it will slow down, but you're already much lighter, healthier and I'm going to guess, happier. Best thing is you've got the tools to know what to do for the rest of your life.
